ASTM Specifications

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and Underwriters Laboratory develop standards that are referenced in building codes, such as the International Building Code (IBC). The American Iron and Steel Institute and the American Institute for Steel Construction are other groups that also maintain standards that are specific to steel design, which metal building designers utilize. A few code referenced standards, and other information standards that are used to design metal building design, are listed below:

  • AISC 360, Specification for Structural Steel Buildings
  • AISC, Steel Design Guide Series 3, Serviceability Design Considerations for Low-Rise Buildings
  • AISI S100, North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members
  • ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings
  • ASTM E1592, Standard "Test Method for Structural Performance of Sheet Metal Roof and Siding Systems by Uniform Static Air Pressure Difference
  • AWS D1.1, Structural Welding Code - Steel
  • AWS D1.3, Structural Welding Code - Sheet Steel
  • UL 580, Tests for Uplift Resistance of Roof Assemblies
